Just want to flag this article from the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia (found by way of the EcoEarth.info/blog) about the fears of scientists that multiple tipping points could be crossed soon catapulting the world towards swift, violent, climate change.

It is arguable that this rather benign world has been the main reason our species was able to leave the caves and create the urban, industrial civilisation we enjoy today. Our complex society relies on our being able to plant crops and build cities, knowing that the rains will come and the cities will not be flooded by incoming tides. When that certainty fails, as when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans last year, even the most sophisticated society is brought to its knees.

More evidence, as if we needed more.  What we need is that more of these stories snap people out of their complacency, lethary, and denial.
