Real ecological hope this Memorial Day
Fostering Ecological Hope
Today from Margaret Swedish:
As we come to the end of this Memorial Day weekend, this wish — no more shedding blood for oil. No more war to assert the right of this nation or any other to wrest control of another country's oil, gas, pipeline routes, or other natural resources through force of arms, imperial reach, forced regime change.
Let us be a people that does not try to solve our fossil fuel dependency problem this way — no more of this, no more. Let us be more willing to alter our lives, to live differently, than to send our troops to kill and be killed. As we took to the roads this weekend, burning up millions of gallons of gasoline, let us remember the connection between this lifestyle (our consumer society, our oil-based economy) and the violence in Iraq, let us remember how our insistence on this lifestyle will keep throwing fuel on the fires of so many conflicts around the world.
I was at a Bruce Springsteen concert last night, part of his "Seeger Sessions" tour. He sang this song to honor Memorial Day, changing one word in the last verse. Had many folks in tears. Thank you Pete Seeger. Thank you "Boss" for reminding us.
