‘The era of less…’
Fostering Ecological Hope
Today from Margaret Swedish:
Sometimes I just want to share things that can get us thinking — no, not thinking. We need to get more out of our heads and into our hearts, start really believing both in our predicament and what we need to do to get out of it. This is not a temporary project, this is the permanent altering of how we live on this planet.
So one of my colleagues sent this article to me from Le Monde, Faire mieux avec moins, or, ‘Doing better with less,‘ translated onto the Truthout.org website (a great resource, by the way) last month. I had missed it, so I appreciated the reference.
I have been saying this, too — the changes in our lives will come whether we want them or not. The question really is how we are going to be, how we will engage them, as they come, and whether or not, in a spirit of cooperation with other human beings, we will do our best to change course, which means changing fundamental values of western society, in a way that makes life ‘better with less.’ Not only ‘the choice of truth,’ but also that of ‘solidarity.’
“If…we know clearly, collectively, and without deceit how to take the measure of the changes ‘for less’ that are before us, if we know how to pilot the developments toward new modes of life in a responsible and democratic way, everything will be different.”
Indeed. Are we ready to do this ‘great work?’
