The US response to global warming - yawn…
Fostering Ecological Hope
Today from Margaret Swedish:
The article that I link to below was sent by a colleague earlier this month. It is from the marvelous and entertaining Grist blog. Grist covers environmental news with commentary that is often satirical and ironic, will sometimes make you weep, groan, and giggle at the same time.
Anyway, with all the bad news we cover on this blog, we wonder when the US response to the climate change crisis might actually begin to reflect something of the urgency of the situation. So, as demonstration of that woeful response, here is a link to a Grist commentary from earlier this month on the Department of Energy’s Voluntary Emissions Program, the one backed by more than one White House.
Laughable, if this were not so serious.
Ecological Hope does not rest in this kind of program. It is, of course, wonderful if anyone, from the individual to the corporation to the international community, takes voluntary action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But a crisis of this magnitude requires organizing at the social, economic, political, and international levels, with enforceable goals and mandates and the funding to support them, along with the personal commitment to work within all these layers of the human community to shift things, and soon, in the direction of an ecologically viable future.
