There’s no going back anymore. We will not re-create the post-war industrial Dream of the affluent American middle class. That era is over. The sooner we come to terms with that, the quicker we get about the business of saving the ecosystems of the planet for the sake of our survival and that of millions of other sentient and non-sentient beings… Industrial civilization and the dedication to growth as our model for life on the planet has brought us to this moment when we either decide to get off that path in a hurry, or face the Great Unraveling. And if we are still placing our hopes and expectations on preserving for ourselves and providing for our children and their children this “nice” life that few on the planet get to actually live, what we will really be passing on to them is something most of us don’t really want to think about.

Ecologically, the news is not so good. We are reaching many tipping points and some dramatic changes are now irreversible. However, in terms of the human response to ecological crisis, well, things are really looking up. As the world warms and the threats mount, grassroots groups are rising up to defend the places where they live.

Where the change is really happening…

Somethin’s happening here – and all over the place. The reasons are sad, but the happenings are not. In the past few decades or so, by as much stealth as possible, the crude oil transhipment network and the explosive growth of the fracking industry have crashed into local communities all around the country. Suddenly, farmers, small town residents, rural areas and cities are finding their “places,” their beloved places – the places that are home, family, community – under threat of contamination and destruction.
