Our world is being mined, torn up, sliced to pieces, dug up, contaminated in order to fuel industrial society. We are going to have to decide what kind of world we want to live in, and how much we are willing to change our lives so that we can live in it. Wisconsin is a glaring metaphor for the choices we face.

The impacts on our natural world of our addiction to fossil fuels accelerate with every passing day.Humans, too, we are part of the natural world being impacted. “All of this destruction, really, is by popular demand, and I am part of that demand.” This situation grows urgent, and we all need to ramp our work to stop the destruction.

We dump not only our mood-altering drugs into our waters, but an enormous volume of endocrine inhibitors, narcotics, and more. Now this speaks to me not only of a danger to aquatic life posed by our unthinking way of disposing of our waste. No, it speaks to me of something far more fundamental: Our western disregard for nature and the delicate balance that holds together the web of life in which we live and move and have our being.

Lake Michigan is receding. Before my very eyes, it is shrinking away from its old shoreline – a combination of global warming, drought, and the reckless behavior of the US Army Corps of Engineers.
