Fostering Ecological Hope

Today from Margaret Swedish:

Missed a day — time got away from me yesterday.  But good things are happening with this project, Spirituality and Ecological Hope.  I will be working with someone on the new website, which I hope to have up and running sometime in November.  We had a great meeting and I’m very excited about this new collaboration.  I will keep you posted.  If you want to help with this project by making a contribution, please click onto the “About Margaret Swedish” page for information.

Meanwhile, after the two previous posts on the Gaia theory conference in Arlington VA this past weekend, I wanted to share something of the new Earth spirituality that is emerging from the new consciousness that is rooted, in part, in our profound predicament — the sickening of the Earth’s biosphere because of the activity of one of her species — us.   The awareness of that sickening is one of the realities that is leading us to a greater appreciation and understanding of the Earth’s life process from which the human emerged and of which we are a part — and a participant.

It invites us to a deeper relationship with this biosphere of life — life in careful balance created over millions upon millions of years — in which we live and breathe and have our being.

Many of you already know that one of the pioneers of this spirituality (the word is used with some caution, as you will read here) is Thomas Berry.  This link will take you to a paper by Andrew J Angyal that provides a good summary of his life and thought.

This new consciousness is emerging everywhere, richly articulated, growing, seething, churning with creative possibility — and a way out of our crisis.  As another example, I found this wonderful paper during this morning’s search.  It comes from India and is beautifully rendered.

Finally, this link goes to an article by Mary Evelyn Tucker, one of our leading thinkers here in the US on the new planetary consciousness.  She describes where we come from, the crisis of this transitional moment in evolution, and our task in this moment to partner with the Earth in this transition, to make possible the continued unfolding of the evolutionary story in, with and within us, or including us.

Just a few reflections for the day.  Enjoy.  Be moved and inspired.
