Today from Margaret Swedish:

Found this disturbing story in the NY Times today by their science writer, Andrew Revkin. NASA image of Antarctica snowmelt, January 2005It’s about new satellite evidence that shows that the global melting that has been going on famously up in the Arctic is beginning to affect Antarctica as well.

NASA issued a press release about this yesterday, which you can read here.

This is more scary stuff because if the South Pole begins to melt along with the North, we will find ourselves with the worst-case scenario in terms of rising seas and inundated coastlines. The Arctic ice cover has been shrinking steadily in recent decades, in tandem with the rise in global temperatures.

Extent of Arctic ice melt, NASA 2006More evidence of the rapid acceleration of the impacts of global warming, earlier than previous estimates of climate scientists.

Just another wake-up call.
