Fostering Ecological Hope
Today from Margaret Swedish:
Well, friends, more studies and more studies that tell us it is going get a whole lot warmer here on earth where we live. Now this isn't new information particularly, but it reconfirms some worst fears.
A group of scientists reported in the journal Science that the melting of Siberia's permafrost has "the potential to unleash billions of tons of carbon and accelerate global warming."
Siberia's permafrost froze some 11,000 years ago, trapping carbon, the byproduct of long buried plant and animal fossils. Billions of tons of methane gas from this vast frozen peat bog are also locked in the ground. Methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
Some scientists believe that the melt has already begun. Researchers have noted spots where the permafrost bubbles with the release of methane gas even in the dead of winter. (For more info on Siberia and the big melt…)
But for me, the more serious problem with this new global warming story is where I found it — a two inch story in a list of little summaries in a section called "Findings" on page 12 of the Washington Post.
Given what global warming and resulting climate change is going to do to our lives (like the already changed weather patterns that have brought persistent drought to the US southwest), imagine if this article was screaming off the front pages and as headlines on all the TV news. Because that is where it should be. Like the Toles cartoon I sent earlier, while the political and corporate and religious culture keep us focused everywhere else, the earth as we know it is coming apart — the earth, as I have written before, can do without us, but without the earth's life sustaining and nurturing ecosystems that gave birth to us, we are, well, dead.
Ecological Hope lies in waking up!
