We mark the beginning of the hurricane season
Fostering ecological hope
Today from Margaret Swedish:
Yes, today marks the beginning of the hurricane season, as if we could miss it given the overwhelming news coverage of the fact. Meteorologists predict a busier-than-usual season, a bit like last year, though that does not mean that anyone knows how many storms there will be, how big they will get, and where they will strike.
To mark the day, and follow up from yesterday's post, I thought I'd send this link to a page on the Nature journal web site. It describes the debate around the science indicating a possible connection between global warming and stronger hurricanes. There is nothing definitive about the debate, only some patterns and computer models that suggest a link between warming ocean and Gulf waters and stronger storms (more heat means more energy). There is a lot at stake in this debate because, if the scientists who believe the link are correct, we should be making some very different plans for our coastal communities.
But then, since ocean levels are rising, and will continue to do so inexorably because of melting glaciers and polar ice caps, we ought to be doing that anyway.
