Never before have humans had to make decisions as huge, and with such enormous implications, as those in front of us now in this very generation. We need to find our collective moral compass – and fast – if we are going to make good decisions, the kind that ensure a living planet for future generations.

The new E.P.A. rules are not enough to avoid climate catastrophe. Meanwhile, climate change is only one aspect of the larger crisis of ecological overshoot, and that requires a whole new approach to how humans learn to live within the limits of the planet. Part of that is changing what we mean by the “quality of life.”
