We have to start creating economies of scale, begin to power down the global economy, and learn again how to live within this planet. When do we need to do this? Oh, right about – now!

New creation is not a “thing” we make. It is an act, on ongoing unfolding. We create – like an artist before a canvas, or a writer, pen and journal in hand. Creation in this sense is not a result, a finished project. It is an ongoing work. It is a journey, full of potential, of surprises, of new insights, new revelations. And this work of new creation has never been more necessary than it is right now.

The State Dept. environmental report on the Keystone XL pipeline is only one indication of our government’s commitment to ramping up our fossil-fuel-based economy. From decisions about playing a far greater role in the refining, transport, and export of tar sands oil to continued encouragement of the fracking industry, despite severe drought and looming water scarcities, the US and Canada are collaborating on a global oil regimen that spells disaster for the planet. A deeper commitment to big changes in our lives and our culture is required if we hope to create a different future than this one.
